Sosaku Japanese Inking Brushes are designed for traditional Japanese-style woodblock printing, where ink is applied with a brush rather than a roller. This method suits the uneven surface of the block and the use of paste mixed with pigment, while also allowing for more expressive control through blending, subtle gradations, and variation in colour strength.
The long-handled hanga bake, or printing brush, is intended for detailed inking and is made from stiff hog hair tied into a bamboo handle. The broader maru bake is used for inking larger areas and is made from tightly packed, folded horsehair. Circular brushing movements help ensure even colour application across the block.
The maru bake should be conditioned before printing so that the coarse cut ends of the hairs do not leave marks in the ink. This can be done by singeing the hair tips and brushing them over coarse sandpaper or silicon carbide paper. For best results, soak the brush for around 10 minutes before printing. Clean after use with mild soapy water and store with the bristles facing down.
