In the playlists section of our YouTube channel you’ll find our new Tutorials playlist, a compilation of some of our favourite instructional videos made by the leading practitioners and art materials manufacturers. We’ve grouped the playlist by process, so you’ll find videos on oil painting, acrylic painting, watercolour painting, pastel painting, drawing and printmaking. At the end of the playlist is a collection of inspiring artist-focused videos. Below are seven highlights from the playlist.

Well respected artist and teacher Alex Tzavaras presents an easy-to-follow demonstration of how he tackles painting a portrait by John Singer Sargent. The video was made especially for the lockdown and provides useful tips on how to continue painting and practising your technique while at home.

Watercolour Painting: How to mix complex colours in watercolour
Anna Mason is an internationally renowned hyper-real watercolour artist and teacher, and this informative and concise video shows her method in complex colour mixing. In the video Anna takes the example of a Magnolia flower and explains how she uses the colour wheel to help make decisions. The video is easy to follow thanks to clear explanations and graphics that highlight the area of the flower she is painting.
Pastel Painting: Painting a sky with Sennelier Soft Pastels
As the days get longer and the weather seems to be consistently glorious, this video shows how you might use pastels to record the sky. Most noticeable is the immediacy of the medium – how the colour glides on instantly and the ability to quickly and easily blend colours with your finger.
If you’re interested in learning more about soft pastels artist Sophie Ploeg’s guide to soft pastels describes the variety to be found within this medium.
Drawing: Portrait drawing with Lizet Dingemans
For many, drawing is the foundation of all visual art. There’s no finer way to refine your technique than practising some observational drawing. Raw Umber Studios weekly videos allow you to draw three portraits in an hour based on photos. Each video uses one model in various positions; a 10 minute pose, 20 minute pose and 30 minute pose. So you can try drawing within a time limitation, or, if you prefer, pause the video and work on a longer, more detailed drawing.

Inspiration: Maggi Hambling ‘Every portrait is like a love affair’
Maggi Hambling is a compelling subject for this video portrait by Tate. Hambling shows us her studio and shares her thoughts on portrait painting. A touching and hugely inspiring watch.
It would be wonderful to do an oil pastel tutorial. It’s a medium that doesn’t get enough love!
Thanks for your comment, we’ve now added a great video by Holly Saunders on oil pastels, it’s #3 in the playlist!
