hmm.., these new bags may look very smart and are recyclable, but they are expensive. And only for use in storing or doing your own transporting, they aren’t suitable for sending by any postal service as they are soft sided. Bubble wrap is surely almost always re-used many times, not just once and thrown out, and in my area and most others plastic IS recycled. Personally I find Stiffy foil bags perfect for transporting canvases.
Thank you for that comment. I was
wondering if these bags were safe to use
for sending A/W by courrier to Ameria but
they are obviously not sturdy enough.
Also, what’s to stop anyone opening the
velcro flap? Think they’d be great for posh
storage!
Hi Carole
These and the ArtPakk Safe Storage Bags are great for self transportation and longterm storage. But you’re right they aren’t meant for shipping.
Hi Pamela
These bags are not meant to be used for shipping, I have changed the wording to reflect that.
They are for self-transport and storage.
We have a product similar to the silver bags but they have a handy velcro closure that you might like – ArtPakk Smart Bags.
Hi,
Hope you can suggest a product…
I store much of my pen and ink art (A3/A4 250g/m2 size) in
folders/box files, which I then put into (white – heavy duty)
supermarket type plastic carrier bags for cheap, long term
storage. These wrap nicely around the folder to keep out air, dust
and damp – taking up less space than portfolios. The problem I’m
having, is that biodegradable bags crumble after a year! This is a
real problem if you’re hoping to “archive” your art safely away – say
in a loft. I’m looking for something with the volume of a carrier
bag (at least a box file + plus wide) made of plastic (similar to
comic book collector/zip lock bags)….Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks for your time.
Graham.
Hi Graham
It’s frustrating isn’t it. I have had things wrapped in carrier bags that I got down off the shelf in a confetti of flakes, with little bag left.
I like the cellophane bags we do that have a self-seal strip. The 10×12 inch size will hold an A4 sketchbook. You’ll need a bigger size for a file. They are stiffer than a carrier bag and crystal clear and seal quite well. Lots of artists use them for sealing a work on paper in a mount for shipping or for display in a print browser. But I use them for a variety of things including storage.
You can also probably find some oversized ziplock bags for storing bedding and winter clothes that could work. Bin bags seem to last longer than carrier bags, but I suppose they are biodegradable, too. You could also look for 44litre plastic boxes with clip on lids designed for storage in damp conditions like a garage that have a rubber seal around the inside of the lid. That can take a few files.
Hope that helps.
Let me know what solution you come up with!
