Kuretake: Japanese Inks & Tools Rooted in Tradition
Founded in 1902 by sumi craftsman Narakichi Watatani in Nara, Japan, Kuretake began as a family business producing traditional sumi ink sticks.
Over more than a century, the company have grown into a globally recognized brand. Kuretake offers a diverse range of high quality tools for fine art, illustration, graphic design, paper crafts, and more.
Kuretake’s journey started with a dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. The release of Bokuteki Liquid Sumi Ink in 1958 marked a new milestone as an alternative to traditional ink sticks. In 1980, the company further expanded their legacy with the creation of the Fude Brush Pen, combining centuries-old brush traditions with modern convenience. Both products remain popular with artists today.
The ZIG brand was established during Japan’s 1970s post-war recession. They brought affordable, high quality stationery to the Japanese art and design market. The original Kuretake ZIG Fineliner, with its ultra-fine 0.3mm tip and innovative slim design, was a groundbreaking product that quickly gained popularity. Today, ZIG encompasses a wide range of pens and markers, trusted by artists and creators around the world.
Gansai Tambi Watercolors are another popular range from Kuretake. With rich, vibrant pigments and smooth blending, Gansai Tambi traditional Japanese watercolors are perfect for fine art and illustration.
All Kuretake products are still meticulously crafted in Nara, Japan, maintaining the company’s founding commitment to quality. Whether creating traditional sumi ink or modern markers, Kuretake blends heritage techniques with forward-thinking innovation.
