Oil Painting - Grattage

Leer más Leer menos

Grattage is a textural technique in which oil paint is scraped away using tools like palette knives, combs, or textured objects. This method reveals underlying layers of colour and creates unique textures and patterns.

Grattage is a French word which translates as ‘scraping’. It was developed from another similar technique used by Max Ernst called frottage, which involves the transfer of textured surfaces.

Commonly used in abstract and expressive painting, grattage adds visual interest and spontaneity. It can be combined with thick impasto techniques for varied surfaces. Discover the tools and creative applications of grattage in oil painting.
