A coating of hard resin will protect your artwork and give it an incredibly shiny surface. If you are looking for that wet-look finish then TotalCast Resin is just the answer. It is an optically clear, high-gloss, hybrid polymer resin system which is especially suitable for the protection of artwork as it provides a tough coating with good abrasion resistance. It is easy to use, safe and non-toxic. It is also great for casting objects from moulds or embedding objects into clear resin.
Easy to Use and Safe
To use this two-part resin simply stir together equal parts of the resin and hardener and pour over your artwork to create a wet-look shine or pour into a prepared mould to cast an object. It is safe and easy to use because it cures at room temperature, is non-toxic and is self-levelling. The resin is non-flammable, odour-free, free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and has no solvent content, so there is no need to wear a vapour mask. For stirring I used a wooden paint mixing stick.
Because it is non-yellowing it is perfect for use on all art surfaces including canvas, wood, MDF and photographs, and can be used over acrylic, oil, watercolour and enamel paint. To create a stable painting structure be sure that your painting is thoroughly dry because the coating, like most varnishes, will prevent any further drying. Remember that, depending on the thickness of the paint, oils can take up to six months to completely dry and acrylics can take a few weeks of curing even after the paint feels dry to the touch.
Each TotalCast Resin kit consists of one container of each component (Resin & Hardener), available in four sizes. When your artwork or mould is ready, simply stir the two parts together in equal parts for four minutes, pour over your artwork or into your mould, and it will start to set within a few minutes. Only mix as much as you need for each work period.
Adding Colour
You can colour the resin with a few drops of acrylic inks for casting objects or for mixed media pour painting. We stock photoluminescent (phosphorescent) powders to mix with the resin for creating glow-in-the-dark objects. The pigment glow will refresh in sunlight each day and it can be re-energised indefinitely.
Coat a Painting With a Wet-look Finish
I made a quick small acrylic painting on a gesso panel. The painting was placed on a paper cup to lift it up, inside a cardboard box with flaps and positioned to level with a spirit level. The well-stirred resin mixture was poured slowly over the painting, it slowly spread and levelled out, you don’t need very much. A quick warming with a heat gun or blow dryer released air bubbles to the surface, where they escaped. The flaps of the box were then closed because any dust landing on the surface during the drying period will be visible on the gloss finish, and it was left to set. The resin creates a thick, glossy coating that is shown here the next day after curing. You can read the full instructions on the product and there is a helpful video below. It is very sticky so you should wear disposable gloves.
Casting an Object
The images below show the latex mould of a tube of paint we created using Pebeo Siligum with a hole at the top to pour into. We cut it open to remove the paint tube, coated the inside with Vaseline and bound it tightly closed with packing tape. We used the same resin mixture as for the painting above but stirred in some Eli aquamarine blue photoluminescent (phosphorescent) powder, designed to be used with the resin. We propped the mould upright and poured the mixture in. We un-moulded it the next day, a perfect copy of the paint tube and it glows in the dark!

Hi, I am ordering totalcast resin trial pack, and I am
interested in using it over photographs. Could it be used
over any photos or do they need to be on matt photo paper?
Hi Jacqueline
They do say photos are a good application and gloss is standard for photos so it makes sense that it would be fine.
Let us know how you get on!
Hi as a model maker i use a product
from the USA called Magic water a 2
part casting resin. i use it on
scenic landscapes to replicate water.
Your product appears similar. can i
ask. 1. does it generate heat as it
dries. 2. does it ‘creep’ at the
edges as some resins do as they
cure.or does it remain totally flat
3. what depth can be poured at the
same time (ie does it need thin pours
or can it be poured to a 5mm depth or
similar in one go) if the answers
fulfill my needs then i shall be
ordering from you!
best
ian
Hi Ian,
Thanks for your enquiry.
Yes TotalCAST is mildly exothermic; it generates approx. 30-35 deg.C exothermic release during cure.
If you are referring to the resin climbing up the mould sides due to surface tension, I’m afraid all liquids will do that. As to the extent of the creep, this is something you will need to test out. You shouldn’t have problems with a 5mm pour though!
Hi
Can it dilute?
I need a very thin layer, not thick.
Thank you!
Hello Nicole, thank you for your comment. If you’re looking for a very thin layer I’d recommend varnish rather than resin – resin is quite a viscous material whereas varnish can be incredibly thin. You can get pourable and spray varnish (the spray option being the thinnest of the two) for all different mediums. If you go to our website and hover over ‘Colour’ you can click on each medium and find the link for those varnishes in there.
Hi
Can you dip items in the resin, I am liking for
something to dip whangee bamboo sow canes in to
give a durable thick high gloss coating.
Hi Vicki
I haven’t tried this myself, however, I would think that the resin would run off the canes if you were to simply dip them in it. You would get only the very thinnest coating. But maybe that is all you are seeking?
Many thanks
Lisa
Hi, excited to find this. I’n working medium to large format,
over one meter in height. Do you think I can use this product
in large format? How much coverage per bottle etc…please
Hi I have tried the tester kit over oil on panel and I love it, I
was wondering how do clean the surface once it has cured.
It is a bit of a fingerprint magnet and I don’t want to damage
or scratch the surface. I will definitely be buying the 4kg kit
next.
Hi Michael
Try wiping with a dilute ammonia solution with a clean rag. Should degrease and clean the surface!
Many thanks
Lisa
Hi,
I read that paper or card needs to be sealed first
before applying resin. Is this the case?
Thank you.
Hi Linzi,
The rule of thumb is if wetting the material that you wish to apply resin to causes it to change colour/appearance, then it will need to be sealed prior to applying resin.
Many thanks
Lisa
Hi there. I’m working on an abstract piece that’s 2.5m x
0.5m.
The piece consists of oil paint, on emulsion, on artex,
on thick mdf wood, with some pva glue in there to seal
the wood.
I’m after a very high gloss finish (a glass look).
Can you please advise me if this product would give me
the look I’m after and if so, the quantity I’d need for this
size?!
Very grateful for your advise
hi Alan,
You can certainly use this to varnish your work. However just to warn you, there are a few materials in your work that are not pH netural (such as MDF and PVA, and possibly the artex and emulsion too) so there is a chance your work will age over time (yellowing in particular is one thing to be aware of).
TotalCast clear artwork resin will cover 1 square metre per 500g of mixed resin (10.7 square foot per 18oz). So 1kg should be more than enough!
Many thanks
Lisa
Hi i thinking of purchasing your Total cast
product as I have done three water colour
paintings which are a set and they fit into a
A4 size if they are all together. I was
wondering will I need to purchase a mould
too as they are not in framed surround if so
what size mould would I need to purchase
from you? How much would it cost me for
this package? I would need it delivered to my
address too in Vermont South. I like the idea
of your product not being toxic and also not
having a strong odour.
Hi Mrs Taylor
We don’t sell any resin moulds. The maker of the Totalcast resin might be better able to answer your questions about the product.
They have a contact us page on their website here: https://elichem.co.uk/
Hello. Is this product suitable for use on stretched canvas
or does it require a rigid support?
Thanks
It works great on canvas.
Can this be used on a 3D sculpture
for a glossy finish? Or does it need to be
a flat panel? Worried drips might be a
issue as it levels and dries.
Hi Rebecca
Yes it drips. It either needs to be flat or a contained mould. But you might be able to do it in thin layers like a varnish. You would just need to experiment.
