Fabriano: The Art of Papermaking Since 1264

Fabriano has been synonymous with fine art paper since its founding in 1264.

Founded in the town of Fabriano in the Italian region of Marche, Italy, Fabriano is one of the world’s oldest paper manufacturers. They have centuries of expertise in crafting high quality paper that artists rely on.

Fabriano has a legacy of craftsmanship that spans centuries. Michelangelo is said to have used Fabriano paper. Its reputation for quality earned it admiration from some of the 20th century's most celebrated artists, including Georgia O'Keeffe, Jasper Johns, Richard Serra, and many more.

In the late 20th century, painter Francis Bacon frequently used Fabriano paper, provided by journalist Cristiano Lovatelli Ravarino, who had received several of Bacon's works between 1977 and 1992. Initially, Bacon cut off the embossed Fabriano stamps, mistaking them for advertisements. This explains why many of his early drawings have missing corners. Over time he stopped removing the stamps, likely after learning their significance in certifying the paper's quality and origin.

Fabriano offers a wide range of papers suited for various artistic techniques, from watercolor and drawing to printmaking and mixed media. Their watercolor papers, such as Artistico, are made from 100% cotton, providing excellent absorbency and durability. Artists appreciate the fine texture, which enhances the vibrancy and clarity of watercolor paint, even with heavy washes.

Fabriano’s dedication to quality is also reflected in their commitment to sustainability. The company uses environmentally responsible practices and materials, such as sourcing cotton from eco-friendly suppliers. This focus on sustainability ensures that their products maintain both high performance and a low environmental impact.

With four production plants across Italy, Fabriano’s centuries-old tradition of papermaking continues to inspire artists today. The combination of history and innovation makes Fabriano a dependable brand for artists worldwide. Their importance is reflected in the town of Fabriano now being recognized as one of Italy’s UNESCO Creative Cities.
