Info
Combining traditions from both silverpoint drawing and watercolor painting, this brush is an innovative, modern and elegant tool.
At one end, it has one of Da Vinci's most classic brushes - the Squirrel Mop Brush. Made from pure blue Russian squirrel hair, this brush tip has been shaped by hand and is carefully bound with brass wire by highly skilled and experienced brush-makers in their German factory. Squirrel mop brushes are fantastic watercolor tools to create a range of fluid marks from large, fluid, deep washes to intricate line work. The natural hair has an outstanding color holding ability and flexibility.
At the other end is one of the most innovative drawing tools on the market: the Ethergraf. Inspired by silverpoint drawing, this metal tip is made from a unique, specially developed alloy that allows artists to draw on any paper they like (unlike silverpoint which can only create marks on specific surfaces). This is because Ethagrafs create marks by oxidising the paper's surfaces, resulting in beautiful, subtle, permanent and waterproof drawings. You can, therefore, use an Ethagraf to make a light underdrawing for a watercolor painting, or add subtle details to your painting once it is done without muddying your colors.

The brush itself is excellent and very enjoyable to use. The ethergraf metalpoint tip, however, was a disappointment. Despite the promotional copy claiming that it would draw on "practically all modern papers", this was simply not the case. Some papers worked very well – for the most part these were dry media papers such as the Daler & Rowney Ebony sketchbook or ink-friendly papers such as the Rhodia notepads, also the "stone" paper in some notebooks. But on many others the ethergraf tip was little better than an embossing tool, leaving an impression and, if you held the paper at a certain angle, a very faint trace of silvery grey. Sadly, this was the case for most of my watercolour papers, e.g. Arches CP 300gsm and Canson Moulin du Roy CP 300gsm as well as the Fabriano paper that Kunst & Papier puts in its sketchbooks. This rather defeats the main purpose of the brush, which is to be a single tool capable of making the pre-drawing as well as the painting itself. If that's how you envisage using it, you will likely be disappointed unless your watercolour paper happens to have the right surface/sizing that will allow the ethergraf tip to work. But if you're happy to use the brush for watercolour and the ethergraf tip for silverpoint-style sketches on other papers, then this might be a realistic purchase.
