overpriced

cheap plastic, very squeaky construction, definitely not worth the money

Favorite portable palette

I have been using this palette on all my excursions for 5 years or more. The deep mixing dishes are its unique feature and they are what makes it my favorite. The full pan model holds an extra generous amount of paint if you squeeze your paint directly into them. I filled the thumb area with half pans of colors I use less often and that provides plenty of variety and versatility. I docked the product one star because it is difficult to open, but read in another review about correcting that problem with sandpaper or a nail file. If you like to use lots of water and lots of paint, this might be your favorite portable palette, too.

My own fault - needed one a little larger

Really disappointed with this and have stopped trying to use it. I fixed my full pans in with Blutak but they continually came loose. Less of a problem was some difficulty in opening the box, and I felt that having to repeatedly wrestle with it probably didn't help with keeping the pans in place. Everything else from Jackson's has been excellent and always superbly packed.

I have used one of these Palettes with 16 Half Pans for several years but the Whole Pan version attracted me as I only use a very limited range of colours. The Palette is very durable with good mixing wells.

Good packaging, fast shipping, very good service overall.Design of palette box is good, it is functional and pleasant too. There are spacers on the main body which holds wells at a good angle when box is opened and in use. Clasp could be easily sanded or filed down for easier opening (nail file would be good-enough tool). Otherwise too much pressure may affect hinges over time, I guess. Material is sturdy, but surface is very delicate; it accepts stains in just few strokes with any/every staining color/paint. Now I know I use many of them. Furthermore, it takes a lot of effort to clean it, more than my other plastic palettes (2 W&N and big and very cheap folding one). Few drops of oil seems to be the best cleaning solution, but WD-4x (which is not just an oil) is the only one which is efficient enough in this case. I fixed the pans in place with some putty adhesive; the paint wells are slightly larger than pans, which is good, otherwise it would be almost impossible to pull pans out.I filled thumb hole from both sides, with plastic card on one and oval shaped thicker plastic on the other. I successfully brush painted outside with 2 coats of model paint (those very small cans of paint), at least day or two drying time. I will drill holes in paint wells to push pans out even more easily with the pin. And I will probably paint the mixing wells also, after experience with 3 cleanings I believe it couldn't be worse.Might be useful:1) Hinge pins are easily pushed/pulled out to take wells apart (to paint everything or to sand edges or just to clean the mixing wells).2) Material is perfect for model paint, might not be so perfect for watercolour staining paints.3) Paint wells (with dividers) are probably meant for squeezing paint directly into. With pans fixed in place with adhesive, dividers are in fact redundant, however, they are not distracting at all.- * only because there must be more appropriate plastic material for WC palettes.
