With both internal and surface sizing, these papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Similarly, just as the paper's sizing retards water absorption, pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably glowing color.
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally rugged. The hardbound bindings - stiff when new - are designed to be broken in. The spines get eased in and then lay completely flat, accomodating both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.
Bound in the United States, this sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:
• Vellum – distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes
• Cold Press – Substantial tooth, enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for multi-media artwork
• Smooth – Suitable for pen & ink, colored pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolors

Sadly disappointed
I had high hopes for this sketchbook but it arrived disappointingly a number of pages had leaked glue at the spine and did not open properly, creasing pages and spoiling the look, and usefulness of the pages.

not too bad but I found the paper a bit weak for someone like me who tends to fiddle and try to make alterations the surface tends to break up and roll into balls, however if you splash it on and take what the paint and paper gives you its great

A superb sketchbook, particularly for botanical artists – heavyweight paper with a lovely, smooth surface. Lies flat when open, allowing me to work across two pages quite easily.

The quality of this art journal is exceptional. Perfectly smooth pages, which are a delight and it really does lay flat as described. The only reason it isn't a 5 star review for me is because I'd prefer a 9 x 12" size in this case-bound format. Worth the money if you're serious about making marks on paper :)
