Review
Based on the cover, I thought this a more "coffee table" book which I actually prefer. As an advanced beginner, I tend to look at paintings and enjoy using them as inspiration to paint my own adaption. Of course, a few tutorials or explanations are also great so I can explore new or various techniques. This book is fantastically thick but it's very text heavy. Brooker spends a fair amount of time on drawing techniques (which I mastered long ago and really bought this book so I could learn more about oil painting), and she also talks a lot about toned backgrounds, brushstrokes, colors... very basic beginner stuff. However, there is a wealth of great info in these pages, even for the intermediate artist, if one takes time to sort through it all. In summary, this book is small on photos and inspiration but large on instruction, so if that's what you want, you'll greatly benefit from it!
