Caran d’Ache Classic Neocolor I are high quality wax pastels used by teachers and students, as well as artists and designers. The water-resistant pastels are versatile and can be used for all kinds of techniques including rubbings, sgraffito, scraping, and even encaustic painting (by heating the crayons and applying to the work when melted, using a brush). The 43 colours in the range have excellent lightfastness and are suitable for use on a wide range of surfaces.

why not as popular as neocolor 2?
The Neocolor 1 is so great for a travel kit. Arty friends always seem to choose the water-soluble 2. The water resistant 1s are so versatile though. You can use them over the top of dry watercolour or simply to draw with. The joy being that if you add colour later - they don't move. I took a tin on holiday to Greece and they worked for the gnarly textures of rocks and fast lines beautifully. I've just ordered a few more colours.
