Smalt was a cobalt-containing glass pigment produced in Europe from the 15th until the 19th century. Earlier examples of its use have been found in Mongolia. Smalt was used by Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn. It is thought that he used the pigment primarily because its large, gritty particles contributed to his textural brushwork, rather than for its blue colour. Smalt has a tendency to go brown in an oil binder, and today the colour is replicated with modern blue pigments.
