Modelling & Sculpture: What Is Air Dry Clay?
Air dry clay is a crafting material that is versatile and easy to use. Air dry clay is perfect for a wide range of art and craft projects.
Unlike traditional modelling clay, air dry clay doesn’t need a kiln or oven to harden. Instead, it sets naturally when exposed to room-temperature air. This makes it a fantastic option for beginners or those wanting to sculpt without specialist equipment.
Once the clay has dried completely and all the moisture has evaporated, you can sand it, paint it, or seal it to enhance its look and durability.
Do You Need To Seal Air Dry Clay?
Even after drying, air dry clay can remain vulnerable to dents and scratches. To protect and strengthen its surface, apply a few layers of primer. For a water-resistant and durable finish, use a polyurethane or acrylic sealer. These sealants provide excellent protection and help your creations last longer.
Prolonged exposure to water may still compromise its integrity, so sealed pieces are better suited for decorative or lightly used items, rather than heavy use or outdoor exposure.
