Cretacolor: Drawing Materials Made with Austrian Craftsmanship
Cretacolor is an Austrian manufacturer of artists' materials that stands out for its commitment to producing innovative tools for both beginner and professional artists.
Cretacolor is steeped in a rich history dating back to 1790. It was then that Joseph Hardtmuth, a Viennese architect and inventor, developed the first graphite pencil, sparking a legacy of innovation that continues today. A passionate patron of the arts, Hardtmuth sponsored composers such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert. Even Queen Victoria was said to be thrilled when she first used a Cretacolor pencil in 1889.
The company’s modern success is intertwined with the passion of Hans Hromatka, a lifelong pencil enthusiast and collector. In 1996, he purchased a pencil factory outside Vienna and transformed it into the Cretacolor brand. His passion for pencils is shared by the Cretacolor team, leading to the creation of products like the Graphite Monolith and Aqua Monolith pencils, both of which have won the prestigious Design Plus Awards.
Cretacolor’s wide range caters to diverse artistic techniques and preferences. Each product is crafted with attention to detail, ensuring superior color intensity, a smooth and rich application, and excellent lightfastness. Whether you're sketching, illustrating, or painting, Cretacolor products deliver consistent quality and longevity.
Sustainability and environmental responsibility are integral to Cretacolor's operations. Over 60% of the company’s electricity consumption is sourced from renewable energy, primarily from wind power, helping to reduce carbon emissions.
With decades of experience and tradition behind the brand, Cretacolor has become a global favorite known for its exceptional pencils and comprehensive sketching sets that inspire creativity across all skill levels and styles.
Today, Cretacolor continues to honor its legacy while driving forward with new products, offering artists a trusted and inspiring selection of drawing supplies.
