Golden Open Thinner is a water-based additive that reduces the viscosity of Golden Open Acrylics while preserving their extended working time. It also helps restore the paint's smooth, workable consistency on the palette as moisture evaporates during painting. When used with Golden Heavy Body or Fluid Acrylics, it can also act as a low-viscosity retarder. As Open Thinner contains no binder and does not form a paint film, it should never be used on its own.
Add Open Thinner sparingly, beginning with approximately 10 parts paint to 1 part thinner. Do not exceed a ratio of 3 parts paint to 1 part thinner, as excessive additions of Open Thinner or water can weaken the dried paint film. It is intended for use in thin applications only.
Open Acrylics naturally remain workable for extended periods, especially when used on a non-absorbent palette such as glass or enamel. Covering the palette between painting sessions can keep colours usable for hours or even days. To further extend working time, lightly mist the palette with Open Thinner every 1-4 hours, or with water every 15-30 minutes.
One of the key advantages of the Open range is that paint films can be reactivated long after application. Before the paint has fully cured, apply a small amount of Open Thinner directly to the surface and brush gently until the paint softens and blends again. Even slightly tacky paint films can often be reworked with a little extra brushing, making Open Thinner an invaluable tool for artists who require extended blending time and greater control over their acrylic painting process.
