Koh-I-Noor was founded in 1790 by Joseph Hardtmuth (1758–1816), who was from Austria. In 1802, the company patented the first pencil lead made from kaolin (clay) and graphite. Koh-I-Noor moved to České Budějovice, now in the Czech Republic, in 1848.
