Founded in 1783, the brand has a long-standing tradition of innovation and excellence. The company was established in London by Richard and Thomas Rowney, initially producing perfumes and wigs. However, in the 19th century, the Rowneys pivoted to art supplies, becoming a leading manufacturer of artists' colours. By 1963, the company merged with the George Rowney Company, another respected name in the art industry, further solidifying its reputation for quality.
Daler-Rowney was among the first to recognise the potential of acrylic paints, launching their Cryla range in 1963. This move placed them at the forefront of the acrylic revolution, offering artists a fast-drying, versatile medium that could be used in a variety of techniques. Cryla remains a favourite among artists for its thick, buttery consistency and rich pigment load.
In addition to its acrylics, Daler-Rowney is celebrated for its broad range of products, including watercolours, oil paints, and sketchbooks. Their Aquafine Watercolours, introduced in the 1980s, provide artists with vibrant, transparent colours perfect for professionals, students, and beginners. Likewise, the Georgian Oil Colour range offers excellent pigment strength and working properties. Both these ranges offer excellent value.
