Magnani 1404: Italian Papermaking Since the 15th Century

Magnani 1404 is one of Italy’s most historic paper mills. They have been making fine art papers in Tuscany since the 1400s, using time-honoured methods passed down through generations.

The story began in a small mill on the banks of the river Pescia. Its clear, mineral-rich waters played a vital role in papermaking, a tradition that soon earned a reputation for excellence across Europe. By the 18th century, Magnani papers were being used by royal courts and national mints, thanks to their durability and consistent quality.

Over the centuries, many renowned artists chose Magnani paper for their work. These include Picasso, De Chirico, Morandi, Guttuso, and many others.

Today, Magnani 1404 continue to produce watercolour and printmaking papers using traditional cylinder mould machines. Now part of the Fedrigoni Group (alongside Fabriano), they remain a trusted name in Italian papermaking.
