Rohrer & Klingner: Inkmakers in Leipzig Since 1892

Rohrer & Klingner have been producing high quality inks and printmaking materials in Leipzig, Germany, for over 130 years. The company was founded in 1892 by lithographer Johann Adolf Rohrer, who began crafting specialised graphic products for the printing industry.

In 1907, Rohrer’s son - also named Johann Adolf - and his partner Felix Arthur Klingner established the firm under the name Rohrer & Klingner Leipzig-Co. From the very beginning, the company was rooted in a passion for lithography and the precision required by artists and printmakers.

After the Second World War, Johannes Rohrer brought his interest in chemistry and the arts to the company, helping to expand its range while preserving traditional manufacturing techniques.

Today, Rohrer & Klingner are best known for their Sketch Ink range, traditional drawing inks, and tusche. Many of their products are still made by hand using time-honoured methods and natural binding agents. Their production prioritises sustainability, with a focus on renewable resources and gentle refining processes that preserve pigment integrity.

Whether used for printmaking, sketching, calligraphy, or professional writing, Rohrer & Klingner inks are valued for their colour intensity, reliability, and long-standing heritage in the world of fine art.
