Speedball: Printmaking and Fine Art Specialists Since 1899

With over 75 years of expertise in printmaking, Speedball are a trusted brand that offer high quality printing inks, kits, and tools for both professionals and beginners.

The company’s origins trace back to 1899 in Camden, New Jersey, in the United States. It was established as the C. Howard Hunt Pen Company, and originally manufactured dip pens. By 1913, a revolutionary new dip pen nib — the Speedball A-series — was patented by Ross F. George and William H. Gordon. The Speedball brand name, first introduced in 1915, eventually became synonymous with the company itself following a major restructuring in 1997.

Speedball played a key role in pioneering water-based printmaking ink. This has helped to make relief and block printing more accessible while maintaining professional results. Today, Speedball continues to be a leader in the industry, producing a wide range of materials for printmakers. This includes their popular Speedball Fabric Block Printing Ink, Brayers and Barens, Lino Cutters, Screenprinting supplies, and much more.

From traditional block printing to modern screenprinting, Speedball’s commitment to quality, innovation, and accessibility has solidified its place as a go-to brand for artists worldwide. Whether creating bold textile graphics or intricate relief prints, Speedball offers the tools and expertise to support printmakers at every level.

We invited David Valliere of Speedball to the Jackson’s Studio for our In Conversation series. In this film, David shares insights into the company’s history, philosophy, and why the artist community is at the heart of what they do.
