What is Gilding?
Gilding is a decorative technique used to cover a surface with a thin layer of genuine gold, or an imitation gold or metal.
This fine coating can be applied to various solid surfaces such as metal, wood, porcelain, stone, and glass. Objects adorned with gilding are referred to as "gilt" objects.
The art of gilding has been practised for centuries, confirming its enduring appeal and historical significance. Gilding creates a lustrous, luxurious finish that enhances the aesthetic value of anything from frames to architectural elements.
A notable technique within gilding is 'Reverse Gilding on Glass', also known as 'Verre Églomisé'. This involves applying gold leaf to the reverse side of a glass surface, a method traditionally used by sign makers, lettering specialists, and mirror makers to produce intricate and striking effects.
