Cobra: Solvent-Free Oil Painting
Cobra Water Mixable Oil Paint, made by Royal Talens, represents a modern method of oil painting with its line of water-mixable oil colors.
Cobra paints were developed by Royal Talens and introduced to the market in 2010. Royal Talens, a Dutch company with a long history of producing high quality art materials, created the Cobra line in response to growing concerns about the health risks of traditional oil painting solvents.
Offering the same high-quality pigments and rich viscosity as traditional oil paints, Cobra allows artists to paint without needing solvents like turpentine or white spirit. Cobra can be diluted and cleaned using water, ensuring a safer workspace. Cobra oil paints offer a diverse palette of vibrant colors, as well as a selection of mediums designed to support solvent-free oil painting.
Inspired by the CoBrA art movement which emerged in the mid-20th century, Cobra carries forward this spirit of change. With growing health concerns and legislation removing solvents from art classrooms, Cobra ensures that artists can continue to practice the art of oil painting without any health risks.
‘Water-mixable oils have been around for at least a decade; I have tried them all and Cobra is without doubt my first choice. The paints are creamy with superb refined pigment depth.
I’ve pushed and pulled them, layered them, used them in an impasto style and tested them in every circumstance. I have run workshops for artists who wish to try them, and almost without exception they have been impressed with the convenience and pure product quality.’
