The company was founded in 1899 in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands, by Marten Talens, a former banker. Originally named Talens & Co., the factory first produced office supplies, inks, and varnishes. That same year, it began making Rembrandt Oil Paint, which quickly earned a reputation for excellence.
