MARS RED
PIGMENT INDEX - PR101
Yellow, orange, red, brown, and black iron oxides occur naturally in the earth, and these have been used as pigments since prehistory. In the 18th century, a process was developed to make these colours synthetically. The first Mars pigment was yellow, and it was made by combining iron sulphate, alum, and potash. Mars Red was created by roasting the yellow pigment, dehydrating the iron oxides to produce a deep, rust red.
Mars Red paints are usually opaque and more powerful than natural earth pigments. However, synthetic iron oxides can be chemically engineered to be transparent, so their covering power varies. Like Red Ochre, Mars Red has excellent lightfastness and permanence. It can be a very useful pigment for a variety of subjects, from portraiture to landscape painting.
Customer Reviews
“I love using these paints, they give a wonderful luminosity to my work.”
“My all time favourite watercolors, such a nice range of artist quality lightfast colors that are easily re-wetted when dried into pans due to the formula. Colors are super nice and vibrant and not chalky at all.”
Excellent range of colours. The large pans make it easy to pick large amounts of pigment and create large washes. Highly recommended.”
