Golden Heavy Body Acrylic: The Legacy of an Innovative Paintmaker
Golden Artist Colors, Inc. was founded in 1980 by Sam, Adele, Mark, and Barbara Golden, building on Sam Golden’s rich heritage in paintmaking that began in 1936.
Sam worked with his uncle Leonard Bocour at Bocour Artist Colors, where he pioneered numerous innovations, including the first iridescent artist paints, the use of phthalocyanine pigments, and the development of Magna, the first artist acrylic paint.
In 1980, after retiring and returning to his passion, the Golden family launched Golden Heavy Body Acrylic Paint as their flagship product. They aimed to transform acrylics from a secondary option to oils by creating a highly pigmented, durable, and versatile paint.
Selling directly to New York City artists, they fostered close collaborations that refined the paint’s quality and performance. The Heavy Body range, celebrated for its rich pigmentation and buttery consistency, quickly gained acclaim, establishing Golden as a trusted name in the art community and laying the foundation for future product expansions.
