When To Use Varnish (and When Not To)

Any varnish that is called ‘picture varnish’, or says it is suitable as a final varnish for oil paintings, will work. If you need to show or sell the painting before it is fully dry, you can use a spray retouching varnish or Gamvar.
Retouching varnish is a varnish diluted with extra solvent. It is so thin that the painting can breathe rather than being sealed completely. Final picture varnish can be applied over retouching varnish when the paint has fully dried. Some painters only use retouching varnish.
Traditional picture varnishes should only be applied once oil paint is fully dry, not just touch-dry. This usually takes 6 to 12 months, depending on the thickness of the paint layers. Varnishing too early can interfere with curing and compromise the paint film.
Drying time of oils and alkyd oils
It takes approximately three months until alkyds are fully cured and can be varnished. Most sources say six months for regular oils, but they will both depend on drying conditions and the thickness of the paint.
A tip: Dip a lint-free rag in a solvent and rub gently on the painting surface. If colour shows on the rag, then additional drying time is needed. If not, your painting is ready to be varnished.
Most high quality picture varnishes, including Gamvar and many conservation varnishes, are formulated to be removable with a suitable solvent, such as mineral spirits or turpentine. This allows dirt and old varnish to be cleaned away in future without disturbing the paint layers. Always check the packaging or product description to confirm whether a varnish is removable.
Removing Varnish From a Painting
First, it must be established what is needed to remove the varnish. It is usually stated on the varnish bottle what is needed to remove it. Keep in mind that some varnishes, such as craft or acrylic varnishes, are non-removable.
Start by testing a discreet corner of the painting – a part that is covered by the frame, for example. Use a lint-free cloth dipped in the mineral solvent or varnish remover and gently rub the surface of the painting. Stop if colour starts to come off on the cloth. Work methodically, removing one small square at a time. When the cloth gets dirty, replace it with a clean one. This is so you don’t spread the old varnish across the painting.
Retouch varnish is a temporary, removable varnish for oil paintings that are touch-dry but not yet fully cured. Applied thinly, it helps even out dull or sunken areas, restore gloss, and give protection while the painting continues to dry before final varnishing.
Using Retouching Varnish
Retouching varnish is designed to be varnished over. It can be used as temporary protection if you have to show a painting before it is fully cured. When you are ready for a final varnish, carefully give the painting a quick wipe with a solvent to remove any built-up dust. Then you are ready to do a final varnish.
Some artists also use retouching varnish during their painting process to 'oil out' sunk-in areas. However, many brands specifically mention that this isn't its actual purpose. But it does add gloss to matt areas.
What to consider when deciding to varnish a watercolour painting
There are a few things to think about when you are considering whether or not to varnish a watercolour painting. The addition of varnish will change the look and feel of the work; some types of varnish will do this more than others. Because paper is highly absorbent, varnish applied to the surface will soak into it and become a permanent, non-removable addition to the piece.
Adding a varnish could re-categorise the watercolour as a mixed media piece. This could potentially exclude it from being considered a watercolour by some societies, museums, collectors, and conservators.

A
Adhesion
The ability of paint or medium to stick to a surface or to previous layers of paint. Good adhesion prevents flaking, peeling, or cracking over time. Adhesion can be improved with specific mediums, grounds, or primers. It is important when working on non-traditional surfaces such as metal, glass, or plastic.
Alkyd Resin
A synthetic resin made from modified plant oils, used in artists' paints, mediums, and varnishes. It dries to a tough, flexible, non-yellowing film and requires milder solvents than natural resins.
Archival
A term used to describe materials that last a long time and resist damage. Archival panels, boards, and varnishes help to protect artwork.

Colour Strength/Saturation
Colour strength essentially refers to the ratio of pigment to binder; it is a description of how vibrant/brilliant the colour appears. Saturation is another term used to define colour strength.

Dammar Resin
A natural tree resin that can be added to encaustic paint. It increases the hardness and colour vibrancy of the paint. It also improves its durability over time.
Dammar Varnish
A traditional natural resin gloss varnish used to protect oil paintings. It dries clear and is removable for conservation, although it may yellow with age.

Fixative
A spray used to protect and stabilise dry media, such as charcoal or pastel. Prevents smudging and fading.
Flammability
The tendency of a solvent to produce vapours that can ignite easily when exposed to heat, flames, or sparks.

Gloss
A surface that is shiny when dry is said to be gloss. Some oil paints appear more gloss than others, depending on the size of pigment particles and their concentration in the oil binder. Gloss can be increased by using a medium when painting.

Lacquer
A hard, durable, high-gloss coating traditionally used in Asian decorative arts. Unlike most artist varnishes, lacquer is permanent and is not intended to be removed.
Lightfastness/Permanence
Lightfastness or permanence indicates the degree to which a colour will fade or discolour as a result of exposure to natural sunlight. Paintmakers refer to either one of two scales designed to indicate the lightfastness of a colour – the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Blue Wool Scale (8 = most lightfast, 1 = least lightfast).

A complete lack of shine on the surface, the opposite of gloss.
Mastic Varnish
A traditional natural resin varnish made from mastic resin dissolved in turpentine. It was a popular varnish for oil paintings in the 19th century. It may yellow with age.

Oxidation
The chemical process by which oil paint dries and hardens when exposed to air.

Permanent Varnish
Bonds permanently to the artwork and is intended for pieces where future removal is not required.

Resin
Dried, solid, or viscous sap or gum secreted by trees and plants (such as conifers and hardwoods). Varnishes can be prepared with natural resins such as dammar, mastic, copal, Venice turpentine, Canada balsam, Strasbourg turpentine (made from Silver Fir balsam), elemi, amber (historically), and others, by dissolving the resin in a strong solvent such as turpentine.
Retouching Varnish
A temporary varnish applied to a partially dry painting. Protects and allows for further painting.
Removable Varnish
Forms a protective layer that can be removed by a conservator for cleaning or future restoration.

Sheen
The measure of reflected light or glossiness from a dried surface finish. It is the primary factor that determines the visual lustre of an artwork, directly dictated by the type and concentration of the resin or binder used within the paint or medium.
Shellac
A natural resin secreted by the lac bug, found in India and Southeast Asia. It has been used as a wood finish and protective coating for centuries. It dries hard and is most common in decorative arts and woodworking.
Sinking In (oil painting)
When paint is absorbed by the surface it has been applied to, the colours appear less saturated than when they were first applied. This can sometimes cause some areas of the painting to appear shinier and more colour-filled than others. Often, there are inconsistencies in the absorbency of a surface, which affects the varying degrees of ‘sinking in’ on a surface.
Soluble
The ability of a substance to dissolve in a liquid. Acrylic paint is watersoluble when wet but waterproof when dry.
Solvent
A liquid used to thin oil paint or clean brushes. Examples include turpentine and white spirit.
Spray Varnish
A varnish applied from a spray can to protect finished paintings.

UV Protection Varnish
A varnish that protects paintings from the harmful effects of ultraviolet light.
V
Varnish
A protective coating applied to a finished painting to enhance its appearance and shield it from dust and damage.
Varnishing Brush
A varnishing brush is a clean, soft, square-ended brush, such as a synthetic mottler, designed to apply smooth, even coats of varnish with minimal brushmarks.

White Spirit
A petroleum-based solvent. Used as an alternative to turpentine. For thinning paint and cleaning brushes.

Yellowing
The natural process in which some oil paints and mediums darken over time due to oxidation.
