What is Acrylic Spray Paint?

Acrylic spray paint is a type of aerosol paint made from pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer. It offers a smooth, opaque finish and adheres to a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, and plastic. With a fast drying time, acrylic spray paint allows artists to cover large areas quickly and achieve professional results. Its portable format and precision make it a favourite for murals, street art, and custom decorative projects.

Why Do Artists Use Acrylic Spray Paint?

Artists use acrylic spray paint for its speed, versatility, and ease of application. Perfect for large-scale works like murals or street art, it allows for even coverage over large surfaces in less time than traditional brush techniques. Acrylic spray paints also provide precise control over layering and transparency. This offers creative freedom for both detailed and bold designs. With minimal cleanup and a wide range of colours, it’s a convenient and effective medium for many art projects. ‘Acrylic Spray Paint allows you to apply thin layers of bold colour onto a multitude of surfaces […] The low-pressure handling system offered by some of the ranges allows you to control your applications of colour more carefully – it’s possible to draw fine lines as well as broad splodges of colour with the right amount of pressure. Exciting to use on their own or alongside other acrylics such as markers and regular paint. All brands and formulas are intermixable, so if something unusual catches your eye there’s nothing stopping you giving it a try!’ - Lisa Takahashi, Jackson’s Art Supplies Expert.

How Long Have Artists Used Acrylic Spray Paint?

Spray paint first gained prominence in the mid-20th century, revolutionising street art and large-scale painting. As acrylic paints became more popular for their durability and quick drying time, acrylic spray paint emerged as a versatile option for artists. Used by muralists and street artists alike, it has been embraced for its ability to produce vibrant artwork. Today, brands continue to innovate, offering acrylic spray paints tailored to the needs of modern artists.
