Canvas Rolls & By The Metre: Popular Questions from Artists
Canvas rolls are full-size, uncut lengths of artist canvas. They are the same surface used in stretched canvas and canvas boards, just supplied directly on a roll. Canvas rolls give you complete control over how your canvas is prepared and used.
Our 'By The Metre' canvas offers the same versatility, but rather than committing to a full roll, you choose the size you need, and we’ll cut to your desired length. Both options are available in cotton and linen, and can be supplied primed or unprimed. We also supply jute and polycotton canvas, which is a durable, blended fabric that combines natural cotton fibres with synthetic polyester.
For many painters, a roll of canvas is the most practical and economical way to work. Rather than being limited to standard formats, artists can cut their canvas to any dimension. This is ideal for large-scale paintings, unconventional proportions, triptychs, and more.
Rolled canvas is also used by artists who prefer to stretch their own canvas. Buying a canvas roll and stretching it over your own bars allows for complete customisation of tension and finish; many artists find a deep satisfaction in working on a support they've prepared themselves.
‘Jackson’s stocks four brands of artist canvas available by the metre: Artfix (French linen), Claessens (Belgian linen), Belle Arti (Italian linen and cotton), Jackson’s (Indian cotton). These highest quality canvases are also used for our Bespoke stretched canvases, our professional-grade ready-made stretched canvases and our Handmade Linen Boards.’

Primed and unprimed options are available across both cotton and linen canvas rolls, giving you the flexibility to work with your preferred ground. Primed canvas is always sent on a roll, while unprimed canvas may occasionally be sent folded. If a canvas is folded, this will always be clearly stated on the product page.

How is canvas by the metre measured, cut, and shipped?
Our canvas by the metre is priced per linear metre and cut to your requested length directly from the roll. Primed canvas is always sent on a roll, while unprimed canvas may be sent folded. If a canvas is folded, this will always be stated on the product page. Full-size, multi-metre canvas rolls are also available for larger projects or studio stock.
How do I know which canvas weight (gsm or oz) to choose?
Canvas is measured in grams per square metre (gsm) or ounces per square yard (oz). Canvases around 200–300 gsm are great for smaller works or highly detailed, smooth brushwork. Heavyweight canvases (400+ gsm or 12oz+) offer better strength and structural integrity, making them the ideal choice for large-scale stretching, tight tensioning, and heavy layers of paint or mixed media.
