Royal Talens’ journey began in 1899 when Marten Talens founded the ‘Dutch Factory for Paints, Lacquers and Inks’ in Apeldoorn, Holland. The brand quickly established what would become a hallmark of quality in the art materials industry.
In 1924, Royal Talens introduced Rembrandt Soft Pastels, in response to demands from artists. This quickly resulted in their pastels gaining international popularity.
Queen Wilhelmina, a regular user of Talens products, shared a deep passion for art. Recognising the brand's dedication to quality, she bestowed the title of ‘Royal’ upon Talens in 1949, a reflection of the high standards and innovative spirit that have defined the company for well over a century.
The introduction of the Cobra paint range in 2010 marked a significant milestone in art supplies innovation. This water-mixable oil paint allows artists to achieve beautiful, durable results without the need for solvents like white spirits or turpentine.
Royal Talens was also proud to have its Van Gogh oil paints featured in ‘Loving Vincent,’ the world’s first fully painted animation film. This project, directed by Polish painter and director Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman, is made up of an incredible 12 oil paintings per second. This showcases the vibrant potential of Van Gogh paints in a poignant tribute to the life and legacy of Vincent van Gogh.
With a rich history steeped in artistry and innovation, Royal Talens remains committed to providing artists with the highest quality materials, inspiring creativity across generations.
