Winsor & Newton: A Legacy of Innovation in Fine Art Materials
Established in London in 1832 by William Winsor and Henry Newton, Winsor & Newton have set the standard for fine art materials, earning a reputation for quality and innovation.
Located at 38 Rathbone Place, Fitzrovia, the company’s origins are rooted in an artists’ quarter that fostered creativity and excellence. Today, Winsor & Newton offers an extensive range of products, including watercolour, oil paint, gouache, acrylic paint, ink, brushes, and more.
In 1835, Winsor & Newton changed the course of watercolour painting with the creation of the world’s first moist watercolours. Winsor & Newton Watercolours were a breakthrough that made painting en plein air more accessible.
The company’s standards of excellence were furthered in 1866 with the creation of the Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brush, commissioned by Queen Victoria, who requested the ‘very finest watercolour brush’ in her favourite size, No. 7.
Winsor & Newton continued to innovate throughout the 20th century. The introduction of Designers Gouache in 1937 provided graphic designers with a reliable medium, while the launch of their first acrylic paint in 1970 and Artisan Water Mixable Oil Colour in 1998 gave artists safe and versatile paints to explore their creativity.
Winsor & Newton remain a leader in art supplies and innovation, introducing Cadmium-Free Colours in 2019 as environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional cadmium-based paints.
Beyond paint, Winsor & Newton have pioneered brush-making techniques since opening their factory in Lowestoft after World War II. Their Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes are still regarded as some of the finest brushes available, reflecting the same commitment to quality that earned the company its first Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1841.
Today, Winsor & Newton products are commonly found in artists’ studios. They offer artists top quality materials such as professional watercolours, oil paint, and inks, alongside their popular acrylic paint and gouache ranges.
Trusted by generations of artists, Winsor & Newton remains synonymous with innovation and craftsmanship in fine art supplies.
‘Painting “en plein air” is always a joyous experience and never more so than when working with the most spontaneous of all mediums, Winsor & Newton watercolour.
The unrivalled luminosity and loose speed of a good watercolour seems akin to a magic trick. Just a few deft brushstrokes of water, a touch of added colour and the magic begins to happen.’
