Finetec GmbH Coliro Pearlcolors can be used in the same way to watercolours using a brush and water, they are suitable for most surfaces including paper, stone and wood. The gorgeous metallic shades are perfect for creating wonderful shiny pieces and have a lovely wavy surface.

Coliro Pearlcolors Mica Watercolour Paints are:
  • Light-fast and pigment-rich
  • Opaque
  • Handmade in Germany
  • Made with Mica-Pigments and gum arabic
  • Free from animal products
  • ASTM certified and CE-conform

We looked at the unique qualities of Coliro paints and how they perform on black watercolour paper - read our blog post to see the results.

Please note: That because each colour is hand-made no two colour pots are the same. Additionally, the colour pots are slightly curved at the bottom due to the natural drying process, this means sometimes a little hole can appear in the middle of the colour pot after some use. This is not a default but an effect on the manufacturing process.

It's more dark grey than royal blue. In normal light it's dark grey, at an angle it's very slightly blue-grey. Nice colour. the sparkle is very subtle. I tried it on light and dark paper.

Probably my favourite mica colour that I own. In normal light, it looks like very dark warm brown, under sharp angle towards the light it's lovely deep green. No sparkle, but it's really nice.

This pink on the photo looks like a very vibrant, cold pink. In reality it's warm, has good granulation, and tiny specs of mica. I'd say it's pretty different to swatches here but it's a very nice colour. Out of 6 mica paints this is the only one I have that has glittery effect.

Very nice granulating effect on white paper.

There's no sign of mica powder in this paint, it's very translucent compared to other colours. The preview swatch isn't accurate. On white paper it's kind of light potters pink and doesn't cover well, at a good light angle, it's kind of invisible. On dark paper, when layered, it's milky and doesn't look good at all. Some other colours from the range deliver a little better on the promises but I found most to be disappointing. Bear in mind these photos are taken with a macro lens and zoomed in a lot. Out of 6 mica colours I have, only one shows mica and the glitter effect is tiny. Pretty, just not as in the photos

True purple, lovely and bright and very smooth colour! I love this shade

Very vibrant shade, a lovely deep and rich reflection. This one activates a little quicker than some of the other shades

Takes a minute to activate but I just drop a little water in before I start setting up to paint and it’s ready for when I need to use, longer than most ‘normal’ watercolours but it’s worth it for the effect it gives!

I got a few colours to test and contrary to some reports I found that the paints did the job. I found Moon Gold particularly useful for pearlising numerous colours and it was very good on yellows and reds. These paints are good for jewelery making, which I do using offcuts from my acrylic and watercolour paintings.

Good, providing an excellent pearlising effect to earth colours.

Beautiful colours, a pleasure to use

The green iridescence is appealing but the base colour is a wishy washy grey brown that when I used for layering destroyed the whites and subtle shades underneath. Not opaque in the way I'm used to, just shiny and blocks other colour. I cannot figure out how to use this product, (including other colours I bought,) successfully.

This is not a beautiful pale blue paint that has a wonderful sheen when viewed at certain angles. This is grey with a pale blue sheen. It is not really opaque, just shiny. It turns any colours painted over into muddy grey versions of themeselves. It is very unattractive unless viewed where the mica shines. It is most successful over black. Limited use, would not buy again.

I find this photo very misleading. The base colour is reddish brown as can be seen a little on the right side of the photo. The cobalt green sheen is only visible at a particular angle. Over a black surface (ink) the sheen was more apparent but on white paper I had to apply a thick coat to see the green effect, so no effects as a wash. The base colour is not opaque, I could see my black strokes easily. It only becomes opaque when reflecting light off the mica. It still is a usable colour but as a brown with pleasing highlights, not as a green with mica effects as I thought I was buying.

Work well on black support but good as a glaze over darker watercolours. The gold is particularly lovely.

High pigmentation. Don’t underestimate me when I say how pigmented they are, they’re my favourite. Especially this colour. Creates mesmerising pieces.

A little less pigmented to what I’m used to, a little streaky.

Even coverage when painting, does not show brush strokes which is good. Has a lot of shimmer but because it's black needs to be looked at a specific angle.
