Conte a Paris : Pierre Noire Pencil : B
Conte Pierre Noire pencils are made with soft leads that are dense, deep, indelible and matt black. These pencils work brilliantly on all types of supports, from craft paper to linen canvas. These pencils are suited to both drawing and sketching. With a sharpened lead, the drawing is lively and accurate; with a half-worn lead, the work is more spontaneous and free.
Grades ranging from H to 3B
Length 176.5mm / Diameter 8.5mm / Lead diameter 5mm

Pierre Noir Conte pencils are a staple in my sketching kit. They’re somewhere between charcoal and pencil, but they aren't squeaky like many charcoal pencils can be, and instead of producing a metallic/shiny grey colour, they are matte black.Rating
The leads are much softer than typical graphite and so too are the marks which you can make. I use them for drawing scenes or making studies of still lifes. To me, Conte has a very tactile, cosy, nostalgic quality to it and it always reminds me of Raymond Brigg’s illustrations, which I would see in books when I was a child.
The B grade is my preferred pencil of the range as you can use the pencil on its side and create shaded areas with ease which you can smudge, but you can also scribble with it lightly, more like a crayon, and produce gestural marks which have a pleasingly naïve quality.
I like working on the cream Stonehenge Fine Art Paper with these pencils as it has a vellum texture and the Conte picks this up slightly when you lay it down. I also feel the unbleached-looking colour matches well with the old-fashioned feel of the pencils. (Posted on 18/11/2022)- Review by Feefo
Excellent product. As expected. (Posted on 30/03/2020)Rating - Review by Feefo
The pencils are good quality at a good price. (Posted on 25/03/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo
Gives you lovely thick black strokes yet not as soft and waxy as the 2B so can take better to slightly rougher paper; though a smooth paper is ideal. Great quality. Good fair price. Will definitely be purchasing more. (Posted on 10/08/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
Dark line and smooth to draw with. (Posted on 16/03/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Just what I was looking for. A lovely mix of graphite, wax and charcoal. I shall be buying more! (Posted on 16/03/2017)Rating - Review by Sebastian Wolff
Perfect, as always. These are by far my favourite drawing implements. Calligraphic charcoal graphite pencils. 20 well-packaged pencils arrived without problem. 5/5. (Posted on 20/08/2015)Rating
