Jackson's : French Style Box Easel
This French style box easel is versatile and ideal for using outdoors for plein air painting, or for those who need a compact easel for their home studio. It easily holds all of your essential paints and brushes and folds up so that it’s easy to carry and store. There’s enough space inside that you can fit your materials in and carry them round with you or tidy them away easily at home. The smart design means you can use it with very small canvases with a height of only 88mm or large canvases that measure 872mm.
It comes with a palette and dividers so you’re ready to go and is sturdily built with a traditional, easy to use design.

I've bought thousands of pounds worth of materials from Jacksons. I'm always thrilled and excited to open their packages, and use their own brand materials. This is the first time in all those years that I've been disappointed. The box part of the easel is laminate, not solid wood, and some of the brass fittings are already bent. The solid wood parts are not all sanded, so I'm trying not to get splinters. The easel itself feels very unsound. I honestly don't want to take it out for plein-air painting in case it breaks.Rating
Jacksons - I love your oil paints, brushes, and mediums, and will continue to use them, but this for me was a real let down. I'm going to give this easel to charity, and look on eBay to see if I can pick up a second hand Mabef instead :-( (Posted on 19/10/2023)- Review by Stephen

I bought this French Easel as it looked great online and for a reasonable price. However, after just three uses the thread inside the fixings stripped. The reason for this issue was due to the cheap metal composite which has been coated to look like brass. Not only are these fixings wholly inadequate for the job but the Knurled design means you are forced to overtighten the legs to get them to bite into position. I am a thirty-year-old man and I struggled to do this with relatively strong wrist strength so it just shows how poor the design is.
I had no choice but to fix the problem myself by drilling new holes and attaching wingnuts to each of the three legs which the design should have had in the first place.
Not only was the product substandard but so too was the customer service. Though I accepted that I did a repair job meaning I could not return the product for a full refund, I was offered a very stingy 10% discount. It was only after kicking up a fuss that I was offered 20% then finally 30% of the value paid out as reward points. To make matters worse, it turns out that the warehouse staff are aware that there have been other issues with the easel but choose to do nothing. I suspect this is due to two reasons, A. They can’t be bothered and B. Jackson’s continue to make money from a product made in China with a large profit margin so are happy to turn a blind eye.
It seems that by taking this stance Jackson’s are becoming less concerned with selling high quality products and instead cut corners to hit a certain price point. If they continue to take this stance, they only serve to damage their reputation and artists will go elsewhere as clearly, they are not to be trusted.

Can't be faulted for value, I couldn't have constructed it for the money, however some aspects not as 'finished' as you might like, the rear leg catch didn't - and needed refitting, an easy fix, but it's not Mabef or Jullian prices and if you are 'handy' it's a good base for improvements and modifications. Beautiful box easel, nice finish, very sturdy. I bought it to be used mainly as a studio easel because it is quite heavy ( didnt fancy carrying it about) but it is so lovely to use that Im thinking of taking it outdoors! It has a shoulder strap, which Im sure will help to transport it around fairly easily. The dovetail joints on the drawer are lovely -the entire easel is beautifully made and finished -I love it. This is well made and sturdy. I wanted a box easel because they are so much more rigid and you can change the angle of tilt without first having to remove the board (a problem with most field easels). This is very adjustable but stays put once set. I can adjust the angle while painting as required. The only problems so far are it is heavy and the drawer is shallow (3.5 cm) which limits its usefulness.
