Jackson's : Raven : Synthetic Mop Brushes : Series 528

Jackson's : Raven : Synthetic Mop Brushes : Series 528

The Raven is a short handled watercolour mop brush which is made from synthetic squirrel hair. It has an excellent take-up and release of water and holds a lot of paint which will enable you to produce long, flowing strokes. The larger sizes are especially useful for creating big washes of colour without having to reload your brush with pigment or water. The hair is soft and holds its shape really well, it retains a really nice point which will be ideal for finer detail.
Please note that this synthetic brush does not contain any animal products, either in the varnish, bristles, paint or glue.

I really really like the synthetic brushes of the Raven series; very soft and lends itself well to precision work. I like the fact that they have less snap than the Icon series. I also really like this small size and find it very useful. (Posted on 12/01/2021)Rating - Review by Ian
Holds lots of water and a keeps it's point. Comfortable to use. (Posted on 21/12/2020)Rating - Review by Yen
Pairing the Raven 10/0 and the Icon 10/0 is my favourite combination. (Posted on 11/12/2020)Rating - Review by Valentina
Very nice brush, dense soft bristles, it holds a lots of water and easier for me to control than real squirrel of this size. It come to a nice fine point and that can be use for details in watercolour. (Posted on 27/11/2020)Rating - Review by Miss P
I love this brush, I have all of the Jackson’s Quill brushes and ordered this one by mistake. I’m so happy that I did as it’s beautiful. They hold water and paint really well and are slightly less snappy as the quill range. The stroke quality is fantastic. I prefer using this and quill range over the higher priced brushes. The brush has maintained its sharp point after months of use. Really great price too. I will definitely be ordering the full range just like a did with the Jackson’s quill range. Been using this and size 3/0 and size 2. Excellent for working a smooth continuous wash, yet good tip allows working around the finer parts. Good paint capacity for big confident washes - less dab-dabbing; essential for shadows! Highly recommended. (Posted on 25/09/2020)Rating - Review by John D.
This brush plus sizes 000 (52830) and size 4 (5284) are excellent for working down a wash, and yet the tip allows working around the finer parts on the way down. The high paint holding capacity allows a smooth, even wash with speed and confidence. Essential for shadows; less dab-dabbing. For size 000, I increased the handle thickness for easier handling using rubber sleeves under heat-shrinkable sleeving (electronics supplier). (Posted on 25/09/2020)Rating - Review by Janet
Great brush, holds a lot of water and colour. I’ve watched a tutorial by an expert and this type was recommended. I love using it. Colour goes on well and good coverage. (Posted on 13/05/2020)Rating - Review by Feefo

I’ve been wanting to get a small mop brush for a while now and I thought I would try this one. It’s great! Hold a good amount of water/pigment and can I say that it’s super cute?! Because it is! So glad I bought it. (Posted on 05/01/2020)Rating - Review by Feefo
holds a good amount of water/paint - and is now the first brush i will pick up for a4 and smaller watercolour pics. (Posted on 17/12/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo
really great mop/quill style brush - picks up loads of water /paint. i far prefer to use this style (also synthetic) of brush than a sensible round sable. - good for very loose painting! (Posted on 17/12/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo
strangely wider than i was expecting - but in a good way -it produces lovely washes and thin lines - no hair shed so far. (Posted on 17/12/2019)Rating - Review by Pamela
Sadly not as easy to use as a comparable size Squirrel mop with watercolour but are better than an ordinary synthetic brush. (Posted on 13/12/2019)Rating - Review by Pamela
These are better for watercolour than the Icon mops but unfortunately far less effective than the Squirrel mops. Laying down an even wash is hard to do with these and the point is rather blunt. (Posted on 13/12/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo
This brush is such an high quality brush. It holds its point so well, as well as water, the only brush I use to lay down the first wash (Posted on 12/12/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo

Holds water unexpectedly well, good quality, gives very nice control and fine stroke. Will definitely try other sizes. (Posted on 06/09/2019)Rating - Review by Diego
I was in need of a brush for half sheet paintings, as the Raven size 6 feels too big and size 2 is too small for my style. Lovely brush, holds tons of paint. Best performance for the price, specially compared with other synthetics of the same size like S.777 Mop and pricier natural mops. (Posted on 14/08/2019)Rating - Review by Diego
Extremely thirsty and soft brush. Holds sufficient amount of water and paint for expressive washes on paper of sizes between A4 and A3. Mine didn't hold a nice fine point for long, but it doesn't bother me too much because I use smaller brushes for very fine lines. It's very well balanced, with a nice weight into it. Best performance for the price. (Posted on 14/08/2019)Rating - Review by Juan
Very fun brush! You can paint a house with this brush, is abnormally huge and can hold infinite amounts of water. I did some abstract experiments and quick sketches with this one (using two or three pigments), and you can get connected washes very easily. By doing this you can get a nice, unified, energetic and fast foundation for a painting, and achieving a great watercolor style effects if you don't over do it. Very fun brush. Maybe a size 4 or even 2 would a be as useful. (Posted on 19/07/2019)Rating - Review by Juan
Wow I'm in love with this one. I don't have squirrel brushes to compare but I have kolinsky and a sable blend and I really like this one. 10/0is really small for a mop but is comparable to a size around 6 or 8 of regular brushes. So is a very very useful and versatile medium size. Very high water capacity and nice point. (Posted on 19/07/2019)Rating - Review by Elina
So big and juicy! And it looks so beautiful and stylish! Great quality--comes to nice point too, together with all other qualities you expect from a good mop. (Posted on 06/07/2019)Rating - Review by Feefo

I really like this brush, I feel no need for other brush as I use mix media and this brush is perfect for washes, also the point is excellent so no complaints there; but if you want a fine line I recommend the 10/0 quill Icon (Posted on 12/09/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
I thought I would try this as I have several smaller Raven brushes and have been pleased with those. This holds plenty of colour, points well and has more spring than pure squirrel mops. Lovely for big washes. I find pure squirrel hair too soft and floppy for my taste, so this suits me well. (Posted on 04/08/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo

Painted 5 completed pieces and some studies with this brush. Amazing paint holding capabilities. Just a little bit stiffer than my previous pure squirrel brushes, but a joy to use nonetheless. Half imperial is the minimum size for this brush, although i think it does better on full sheets. (Posted on 23/05/2018)Rating - Review by Christine
Delighted with this brush. Fine tip, holds lots of water and just a pleasure to use. I can see more sizes in my future. (Posted on 23/03/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo

I'm struggling to use this brush, beautiful brush but much bigger with a huge paint holding capacity than I expected. Maybe I need to start working on full imperial (Posted on 20/03/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
Great mop brush performs as well as any squirrel brush. Retains large amount of paint, great for washes but still has a fine tip for detail. (Posted on 28/02/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
As good as a hair brush and good value. (Posted on 15/12/2017)Rating - Review by rebecca
Famtastic watercolour brush, holding masses of paint with an excellent point. This brush and others from the Raven range have been the best ones I have used and have travelled everywhere with me. These are really wonderful brushes. They hold masses of paint, perform beautifully when releasing the paint and also have a lovely point. Lovely brush, amazing for price. Hard to tell it's not squirrel, just a mite stiffer. Wonderful point and hold loads of paint. I love it! (Posted on 19/08/2017)Rating - Review by Margarita
Really good brush, if I didn't know i would've thought it's squirrel. Very thin end helps with small details, while thick core of this brush can hold large amount of water. I've got number 0 and its ideal for A4-A5 formats. Will purchase it again in different sizes. (Posted on 14/08/2017)Rating - Review by Chris
Brilliant brush hard to see what is different about it to squirrels except the price. (Posted on 06/08/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
very nice brush, to be used with gouache, hoping it will be a little tougher than squirrel, for that reason. (Posted on 20/07/2017)Rating - Review by Nicholas
I brought those bushes to go on holiday to Scotland because to me they were the wright Price l seem too loose brushes on a regular base's and l did not have to worry if l did. Well what can l say these brushes are great they come to a lovely point they disrupt the water in a lovely way better then some of the more expensive brushes l have they well made for the Price . So l hope l don't loose them..l strongly recommend them they are great to use l shell be buying more. Fast delivery from Jackson's great service. (Posted on 05/07/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo
Absolutely love this brush! This is so different to standard faux-sable synthetic brushes. The bristles are soft but still hold a point, and the body holds a huge amount of water. I also have the Jackson's Icon quill in 10/0 (which I didn't realise was a natural/synthetic mix, so I'm not a bit miffed about that) and this Raven brush holds far more water and produces much better results. Definitely recommend! (Posted on 26/05/2017)Rating - Review by Eve
My favorite brush. Holds a fine point for thin lines, but can also be used with more pressure or on the side for nice broad lines. I wish it came as a travel brush too! :D (Posted on 30/04/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

This brush is the largest in the Raven series. Excellent for watercolour and at a price any artist can afford. I now have the full set and am really pleased with all the brushes. I have been painting with Derwent inktense which and finding them them the ideal brush. My first attempt was to paint some Mars landscapes from NASA photos which inspired me on Youtube. Inktense is a new medium to me and the brushes served me well. (Posted on 22/12/2016)Rating - Review by Feefo
I have been using this brush since ordering it. I bought it two days before a half price sale. I was so pleased that I bought the rest of the series and am well pleased in using them in watercolour and with Inktense pencils and blocks. The are ideal for Inktense as they lick up the colour well from the blocks and and make good washes of colour. This 000 size was good for detail. The only advice I would offer is to was them out thoroughly after using them with Derwents Inktense. love it for watercolour (Posted on 22/12/2016)Rating - Review by Feefo

Very useful pointed mop, I have three different sizes now and they do not disappoint. (Posted on 20/06/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo

Superb brush, holds paint well and keeps its point (Posted on 20/03/2018)Rating - Review by Feefo
Would highly recommend them. Becky Samuelson Isle of Wight (Posted on 09/11/2017)Rating - Review by rebecca
These are really wonderful brushes. They hold masses of paint, perform beautifully when releasing the paint and also have a lovely point. I have been using constantly them since I reviewed them and am happily recommending them to all my classes. Becky Samuelson Isle of Wight (Posted on 09/11/2017)Rating - Review by Chris
Lovely brush to use and feels as though it will last, nice quality and feels well in the hand. (Posted on 22/03/2017)Rating - Review by Mythril
Very good brushes. Virtually impossible to tell apart from the best squirrel mops on the market, soak up a ton of water and come to a fantastic point every time. (Posted on 13/01/2017)Rating - Review by Mythril
