Jackson's : Icon : Watercolour Brushes : Series 700 / 702 / 777 / 7776
A mix of tradition and modern technology, these Icon brushes represent the advancements of science combined with the classic needs of the traditional watercolour artist.
The uniqueness of the Micro-Synthetic fibre is twofold. Firstly, the fibres are treated to produce millions of tiny indentations. This increases the surface area of the hairs allowing a much greater colour holding capacity for the brush. The hairs are then treated with a special process that frees the micro-synthetic fibres of any static electricity which makes brush fibres stick together. Following this treatment the hairs can smoothly and precisely react to any kind of stroke, either delicate or abrupt.
The Quills and Mottlers feature the micro-synthetic sable and are vegan-friendly. Other brush shapes in the Icon series feature a mix with natural sable hairs, creating a brush that behaves closer to pure sable but at a fraction of the price.

Love this brush, the number 4 is great for big, juicy washes, yet still holds a good point for getting in some details, reasonably priced and well made. (Posted on 16/02/2023)Rating - Review by Harriet
I purchased this brush for some illustrations I am doing using drawing inks. I have a number of Jackson’s brushes and find the quality to be excellent, especially for the price. This brush in particular is designed to mimic sable, which would cost 2-4 times as much, for example.Rating
The brush came well packaged, in a biodegradable Vegware envelope, with a protective cap and the bristles slicked with gum arabic. The hand-twisted wires around the ferrule and the black handle are very elegant and are a nod to the Japanese squirrel brushes. This brush is vegan-friendly, however. It looks very smart in my paint pot and I feel the photograph is a true representation of the product itself.
The reviews and information noted its capacity to hold a large volume of water; this is certainly true and I find this useful for when working in inks, as it allows me to achieve seamless gradients of colour. It’s also very springy and retains its point well - I tend to ‘scrub’ the paper, and this was no issue for this brush, which has a good amount of resistance and snap. It feels well-made and durable.
Another feature which I like about this quill is its versatility to produce a wide variety of marks. The pointed tip is great for lines and detail, whereas the side of the brush can be used for larger, gestural marks and shading. I am pleased I purchased this and have no doubt I will be using this regularly. (Posted on 05/07/2022)- Review by Christian
Light to handle and manouvre, great water retention ensures you have more flexibility in covering/painting the areas you need to address. benchmarks well with pricier options. (Posted on 30/05/2022)Rating - Review by Mirta Gabriela
This is an excellent brush! so soft and delicate. one of my favourites. (Posted on 19/01/2022)Rating - Review by Jane

Excellent brush! Capable of holding a good amount of water. It is not too soft and has a fine point which allows for fine details. One of my favorite brushes, and I will most definitely buy it again :) (Posted on 29/08/2021)Rating - Review by Pamela
I now have two brushes from this range, a 10 and a 6, which are lovely to use. When I started to paint with watercolours I bought cheaper brushes with nylon bristles, but after a couple of years upgraded to ones from the Icon range: I felt the difference immediately as the brushes are so responsive, hold paint very well, and the points have remained sharp and precise with no splaying after several months' use. At the price, they’re a steal. (Posted on 12/08/2021)Rating - Review by Lesley
I’m new to watercolour painting and no expert but this is always my go to brush. I have brushes that cost way more than this that aren’t as user friendly. (Posted on 09/08/2021)Rating - Review by BoziCraft
Really good brush. keeps a fine point and keeps a lot of paint at the same time! (Posted on 29/05/2021)Rating - Review by Valentina
I love this little brush. It holds a good amount of water and it is soft and very thin allowing you to be precise on small watercolor piece. Good price also. (Posted on 02/03/2021)Rating - Review by Valentina
I like painting with these Icon brushes, they come to a really fine point which allows for fine details. The bristles have some snap but not too much. (Posted on 12/01/2021)Rating - Review by Valentina
Brush for very detailed work, it holds its shape very well and allows really thin lines. It has some snap like the other brushes of this series, but not too muchRating

This has been my favourite and most-used brush for the past few months. Great spring, snap and water control like synthetics but holds so much water like real sable. If anyone is looking for an inbetween step, this brush definitely gives you the best of both worlds :) I wish Jackson's would make travel brushes of this range. I'm absolutely loving these brushes, so much better than the cheap ones i was using before. They respond beautifully and and have a really nice feel to them. I'm sure I'll be using them for a long time (Posted on 19/11/2020)Rating - Review by Marianne
This is the perfect brush for me, good for washes but also precise in (not too small) details. Easy to clean and it keeps the shape. (Posted on 15/11/2020)Rating - Review by Yen
Favourite brush. Can't live without it since I first used it. 10/0 is an amazing and versatile size. Capable of a finer line than I imagined. Holds more paint than the average sable round brush to give even washes of colour. How did they make this brush so nice to use with both watercolour and gouache? Just the right amount of snap. Really wished I had found these Jackson's brushes sooner. I have spent HUNDREDS in the pursuit of the perfect brushes and finally found them. Started with a 6 and now the 2 and 10. Others will be joining my set!! I have sable brushes and find them hard to control (too soft) so tried the Silver Black Velvet. Good but still little floppy. The Jackson's Icon brushes are the perfect balance. LOVE THEM!! (Posted on 26/09/2020)Rating - Review by Gail

Always on the hunt for that "magic" brush that will improve my painting but hate paying the price. Found these Jackson's Icon brushes to be lovely! I bought the Round 6 and Flat 3/8 and I'm not disappointed. Good spring in the hairs and holds good amount of paint. I can see the Icon rounds replacing my Silver Black Velvet brushes. Can't beat them for the price. I'll be buying more. Very Happy!! (Posted on 05/09/2020)Rating - Review by Joshua
Jackson Icon brushes are absolutely excellent. They tick all the boxes for what makes a brush a good brush. The price is right too, I don't see a point in having most of my other brushes now that I have the full Jackson Icon line-up. (Posted on 29/02/2020)Rating - Review by Joshua

Perfect brush such a joy to use. (Posted on 09/02/2020)Rating - Review by Joshua
After doing some odd number of projects using this brush I can officially say it's my favorite/go to brush. Not only does it hold plenty of water/color but it's also the perfect shape. It's not a standard round and not extra pointed round, it's in between. It allows you to do all the standard round brush painting and small details, it's an excellent all around brush to use. I wasn't going to buy this brush at first but they were on sale so I did, very glad I decided to. (Posted on 08/01/2020)Rating - Review by Joshua
Holds a lot of water/color and retains it's shape/point well. Too early to tell but this brush may become my new go to for general watercoloring. Even if it doesn't it's an excellent brush, very high quality and performance. (Posted on 06/01/2020)Rating - Review by Feefo

I wanted all synthetic brushes, I read the description wrong and end up with those. Now that I have them, they became my favorites so far. I have 10/0, 3/0 and 0 and they cover all my needs for basic painting, they're soft but hold an excellent point for details, hold a good amount of water and fit in hand perfectly. They look and feel high end and easily fit in a high-quality range of brushes, but at a much affordable price.Rating
The only low point as already mentioned by Joanna, not really about brush itself, I too, wish that glue from the label would come off easier - I use baby wipes to clean it off, it helps :) (Posted on 09/11/2019)- Review by Feefo

Rating

However, I was completely surprised to find this brush worked well and carried colour well with a good point and could be described as the old artists used to call their brushes a "sable pencil". The brush handle is comfortable in the handle and is well balance which is an important point. (Posted on 16/03/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

They hold a generous amount of paint, are a pleasure to hold, and the bristles retain their shape, after cleaning. Because of the fine points on the brushes, painting intricate shapes is made easier.

I just tried this out because I had this on last minute deal. It looks super hard when dry but is soft when wet. Retains its shape so you're able to make detailed strokes and spread the colors evenly. When loaded with large amount of water each strokes will have the wet in wet look - and I really love this effect! Great for loose techniques and also gives you more control when painting in wet-in-wet! (Posted on 20/08/2015)Rating - Review by Feefo

Excellent brush, great to use, good water holding, point and spring. Good value too, would definitely recommend (Posted on 11/09/2021)Rating - Review by Anja

Absolutely love these brushes, they are fantastic to work with, they hold water really well and maintain their points really well. Really reasonable on price too. Highly recommend (Posted on 25/11/2020)Rating - Review by MC

Excellent brush, can be used as a med - large round or small mop, great all around do it all brush. (Posted on 29/02/2020)Rating - Review by Agric
I like this brush. Good point and a bit more spring than similar sable, holding very nearly as good as sable. Excellent, well behaved and predictable general purpose brush. (Posted on 19/02/2020)Rating - Review by Feefo

Rating
Ich werde ihn wieder kaufen! (Posted on 05/12/2018)- Review by Anja

A very good brush, worth more than its price. Holds a great deal of water and comes to a fairly thin point. What really made it for me was the light weight of the brush and the texture of the handle, a joy to use. (Posted on 08/06/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

I needed a big sable but couldn't justify the price. This brush fulfills my need, it's obviously not pure sable but is great to paint with. I have a couple of the large 777's as well and they are just as nice to use. A great bang for your buck! (Posted on 16/03/2017)Rating - Review by Feefo

I am a sable brush man myself. I have a nos.14 Diana Kolinsky sable etc. and a W&N nos.12 series 7 plus many more beside.

I first tried one belonging to my art tutor, after he had recommended them to me. I was so impressed that I bought a set of round brushes, 2,4 6,8,10, and 12, and have never looked back.Rating
They hold a generous amount of paint, are a pleasure to hold, and the bristles retain their shape, after cleaning. Because of the fine points on the brushes, painting intricate shapes is made easier.
I have no hesitation in recommending these brushes to colleagues in my painting groups, and I know some of them have purchased a number of brushes. Real value for money. (Posted on 16/05/2016)- Review by Feefo
