A removable picture varnish that gives tough protection without gloss. A satin varnish can be made by mixing with gloss varnish.

The Picture Varnish Matt is a solvent based product and is ideal for use on oil based mediums, not water based. When using acrylics or water colour paints you should use a spray varnish so as to not disturb the paint underneath with abrasive brush stokes.

Other points to consider are; the drying time of the paint. The paint must be thoroughly dry before applying any varnish otherwise water and air particles become trapped between the painting and the varnish and create a whitish sheen. It is also very important to mix the varnish extremely well by shaking the tin thoroughly and leaving it to stand for several minutes so that all the bubbles settle resulting in an opaque fluid ready to apply.

Hugely disappointed with this varnish. It's most definitely not matt in it's effect. Too shiny. I'm now going to have to remove it which is incredibly annoying. (Posted on 06/12/2016)

I like a satin finish, so followed guidance in the catalogue mixing matt & gloss together. In the end I found that the pure Matt varnish was still too shiny for me. Not good. Wish I'd read the other reviews before I placed an order. (Posted on 20/08/2015)

This product tends to dry in ridges even if applied reasonably thinly. It helps to follow the brush strokes of the oil painting and constantly move the varnish brush around rather than applying the varnish in parallel strokes. Careful: a second coat turns the matt varnished surface into quite a glossy one. (Posted on 20/08/2015)
The only problem I found with this product is if you put to much varnish on your brush it doesn't dry smooth, it leaves a ridge. So what you have to remember is it is not like paint it dries very quickly so you need to take most of the varnish off the brush before applying it, then you will get a nice even application.
