Enhanced wet strength suitable for mixed media renderings.

Paper shade: Ivory.
Surface: Rough.
Sheet count: 26 sheets/52 pages.

With both internal and surface sizing, these papers have exceptional wet strength that supports the application of multiple washes. Similarly, just as the paper's sizing retards water absorption, pigment stays on the surface of the sheet. The result: remarkably glowing colour.
Stillman & Birn bindings are equally rugged. The hardbound bindings - stiff when new - are designed to be broken in. The spines get eased in and then lay completely flat, accomodating both two-page drawing layouts and flatbed scanning.

Bound in the United States, this sketchbook system offers artists a choice of three paper surfaces:

• Vellum – distinctive tooth, suitable for all dry media, and will also accept multiple washes
• Cold Press – Substantial tooth, enhanced wet and tear strength, suitable for multi-media artwork
• Smooth – Suitable for pen & ink, coloured pencils, water-based markers as well as watercolours

Review by Jane Sketching
A real luxury sketchbook. I bought this as a treat for myself before a holiday. Its pages are strong and thick - and slightly "hammered", perfect for watercolour. As other reviewers have said, the paper is very slightly creamy colour - a very light tint. It opens flat, so I could paint across two pages.
I do "pen and wash" sketches, so some of my washes are very wet. It took watercolour perfectly: it's real watercolour paper - you can damp it several times. Also I found I could erase pencil with no noticeable effect on the paper.
It also takes pen very well - zero bleed, very clean precise lines. When the drawing is dry, the page is still flat. It's also possible to do a watercolour on the reverse side of the page - I found no bleed through to the other side, so although "26 sheets" is fewer than some sketch books, since you can use both sides of every page, so you are carrying around only useable pages.
The overall quality is exceptional, and a great spur to creativity.
No pocket at the back, no bookmark, and no elastic to keep it closed. Which is fine by me, but might matter to some people. I used bulldog clips to keep the pages from blowing around in the wind while drawing, and to keep the book closed in my bag.
The hard covers are hard and flat, and a fine support for painting.
This is a really excellent sketch book. I will buy another from this range when this one is finished. It would make a first class present for the watercolorist in your life, or for yourself. Functional luxury. (Posted on 21/05/2017)

Really nice sketchbook. This is the ivory coloured version with similar weight quality and Rough surface as the Beta series - except for the colour - and I like the fact that the ivory tint is quite light and gives a pleasant sketching experience. (Posted on 20/08/2015)
