This is a pack of six Viarco Soft Carbon Water-soluble pencils. The lead of these pencils is extremely thick. It produces a dense, rich black which can be blended, lifted and moved around with the addition of a little water. Perfect for figure drawing or landscape sketching.

I must have tried nearly every brand of carbon pencil on the market. I prefer them to charcoal as being less messy and not needing fixing. Many are infuriatingly harsh with gritty cores that are unpleasant to use whilst others with softer cores are a nightmare to sharpen. These were a pleasant surprise. Firstly, they have a thick core with a very thin casing that makes them really easy to sharpen. The core has a smooth, creamy feel that makes it easy to produce a dense non-reflective black from a fine line to a broad area of shading without it snagging or snapping. Achieving every tone from the palest gray to a deep black is easy to do as they glide over the paper pleasantly. Although I prefer to use these dry these may lead me to add water as they give dramatic contrasts whilst increasing in intensity.( I've found too many water soluble pencils wash out far too much into a shadow of the original sketch but these are the opposite.) I'm delighted as not only have I finally found a superb carbon pencil but also one that is going to encourage me to experiment. (Posted on 19/02/2020)
