The Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache Introductory Set is an ideal starting point for artists looking to build a collection of gouache paints. Designers Gouache colours are a range of opaque watercolours, so called because they were developed for and continue to be used mainly by designers. Gouache is also used by fine artists as an opaque watercolour, often in combination with watercolours.

The set consists of ten 14ml tubes of Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache (Primary Yellow, Permanent Yellow Deep, Spectrum Red, Primary Red, Ultramarine, Primary Blue, Permanent Green Middle, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, Zinc White.) These vibrant, lightfast colours cover a wide spectrum, and can easily be mixed to create more specific tones.

I was keen to try out Gouache paints, so I bought this Winsor and Newton Introductory
set. It contains 2 of each of the Primary colours as well as a middle green, an ochre,
and a black and white, so all you need to get started. The set is great value for
money. Each tube is 14ml which is a decent size and the colours are opaque and
velvety, so a little goes a long way and offers superb coverage. The box which they
come in is made from hard, durable cardboard which is laminated to protect it from any
moisture. The tubes sit inside molded plastic, so they can be stored safely and won’t get
damaged.
I use these on their own mainly for illustrative work, for example, commissions where
clients have asked me to paint a character from a video game. They are well suited for
flat, graphic work with bold colours. They mix well without muddying and there is no
visible colour shift when dry. I also like to use them in conjunction with watercolour. As
they have more body than watercolours, the white is great for picking out highlights or
