Info

Made to the exact same standards and formulas as the best professional artist watercolours available today, Jackson's Artist Watercolours are as good as any leading brand watercolour but at a fraction of the price.

Large chunks of the finest quality Sudanese Kordofan gum arabic are very slowly dissolved in cold water to preserve the gum's maximum binding strength. Honey is then added to give lustre and vivacity to the colours. Carefully selected for their purity and lightfast qualities, the finest pigments are then finely ground and soaked in purified water to allow the colours to develop their maximum splendour. The two mixtures are then blended together and slowly ground into a fine paste. The process is repeated until the pigment particles are dispersed evenly and finely to allow a flawless unity of the watercolour wash. Stringent quality controls follow, resulting in a selection of professional watercolours that are luminous, intense and a pleasure to use.

As I have progressed in my art and became more confident I started to try paint outside the student range after trying Jackson’s paint I found it good quality and easy to mix and value for money..

Review

Good colour and consistency. Easily rewets in the palette. The problem I have with all of Jackson’s tubes of watercolour is that they leak excessively each time they’re opened - this results in very sticky tubes and subsequent difficulty in closing the tops.

Jeanette

Review

At first, I was sceptical. Sometimes I hear from friends that they have found a good colour at a good price. Since I paint a lot, I naturally look at these colours. Not a single colour I have tested so far has come close to any of the well-known brands. I can say that this colour is not better than one of the well-known brands, no it is not. But it's not worse either, I don't see any difference. Sorry, I do see a difference, the colour is much cheaper. One wonders why that is, is it because of the material? I don't think so, I think the big brands are lining their pockets because they are exploiting their market power. English is not my mother tongue, sorry if you find any mistakes.

Beautiful, warm colour. I’m pleased with the quality and use it in a variety of ways.

Review

Good overall but does have a tendency to separate (from what I assume is the honey) when squeezing the tube into a palette. I didn’t have this issue with the Naples yellow, so this may have been a one off issue with this particular tube.

Jeanette

Excellent overall. Highly saturated and easily rewetted. A little too granulating for my taste.

Very vibrant. Beautiful watercolour, which is vastly superior to others I’ve used to date. The Naples yellow is opaque and is incredibly useful for adding highlights wet on dry.

I love Payne's Grey and decided to test Jackson's professional watercolours using a colour that I know and love. I'm really satisfied with its texture and the ease to rewet it on the pallete. Planning into purchasing more Jackson's colours in the future.

This is quite nice. Very close in hue to many PR179, a drying blood colour, good alternative to transparent PR101, mixes well, good darks with PG7 and turquoises. I'll be evaluating in comparison with burnt siennas, PR101, PR179. The paint handles well, rewets easily. Like it.

Less green than other PB35 ceruleans I've used, good semi opaque mid blue with a bit of granulation. Only a little less red than Jackson's cobalt blue but a quite different colour in use. Very good.

Review

A very nice ultramarine, good dilute for skies, mixes well with other colours. Probably the most useful general purpose PB29 I've found. The DS French ultramarine is more intense but I don't often want that; Ken Bromley's is more granulating which is a two edged sword.

I like this very much, an excellent (near perfect) warm red, nearer transparent than opaque, handles very well, vying with Ken Bromley's PR166 Vermilion hue for that spot in my palette, will take a while to choose. Close in hue to others' PR188 and PR255 vermilions but I prefer this and the KB. A beautiful and useful paint, a bargain at normal price.

Love this paint. Has all the qualities a good cobalt must have. Not so deep mid blue, granulates like hell, separates in mixes. Excellent price.

Diego

Review

Lovely, not so cool, blue hue with low tinting strength, pastel like qualities and readily granulating. Can be aproximated by mixing a little PB15:6 and PW6. Separated from the binder and takes a lot time to dry inside a warm environment once poured in pan, both unlike cobalt blue.

Diego

Review

This PR242 is a good choice for warm red when paired with a cool red / magenta like PV19, it's good quality and mixes well. Some alternatives are: Ken Bromley's PR166 vermilion hue and Schmincke's PR188 vermilion light. Interesting to have 3 excellent but uncommon pigments in the same space, I've not made my mind up yet! Which works best for you probably depends on how they mix with your other favourite paints.

Absolutely agree with the description. This is a beautifully clean cool lemon and the best I have found for mixing fresh and lively spring greens. It works beautifully with Jacksons Ultramarine Deep - a combination in some brands that tend to create greyed out greens.

Have grown to love this Jackson's Burnt Sienna... but it was different from what I was used to, particularly how it looked on the palette. But it is strong and vibrant with some visible granulation - this makes for characterful effects on paper and mixes great darks. Have just started using it with Neutral tint for amazing range of browns.

Feefo

Review

I love this Ultramarine deep from Jackson's and prefer it over WN in colour, performance and handling. It has slightly less red bias I think so mixes better greens and to my mind looks better in sky washes too. I have found this a more versatile Ultramarine and so juicy to paint with, probably due to the honey base - It's always ready to go even if you let it set up in a palette.

This is a lovely rich orange which, when picked up with more water on the brush, is a really lovely mellow orange yellow... very good for botanical work as most oranges I've tried are really quite harsh. This colour is a mix of cad yellow and cad orange which i could mix myself but when out and about is always useful to have it ready. Also works well on black watercolour paper.

I added the colour to the Jacksons set of six watercolour tubes as I felt the lack of a cool red. It is a very vivid slightly purple magenta that mixes really well to make a range of colours. I have been a fan of Sennelier watercolours for a number of years. When I discovered Jackson's used honey in their watercolours like Sennelier I thought I would try some. While using W&N Artist's Quality as my basic set, I find Jackson's Raw Sienna and (especially) Raw Umber really natural and strong. They work together beautifully in creating images of nature - not necessarily what I intend to create!

Review

This Cerulean surprised me at first as it leans slightly closer to a pale cobalt blue than the more l turquoise blue shade - but I really like it as a more natural sky colour and blends well in a sky wash with Ultramarine and cobalt blue. It has heavy granulation and flocculation creating interesting textural and separation effects in some colour mixes. I particularly love mixing it with iron oxide based colours for great textural greys / grey-greens, great for painting rock or stone as you can get the flocculation of the blue cerulean particles to resemble lichen if you get the mix right.

This is a fantastic paint. I compared it with Genuine Carmine and it is incredibly convincing; I made a swatch of each, and when I asked people if they see if they could tell the difference between Carmine and Genuine Carmine, I'd often hear, "Ok, and where's the other one?" and had to explain that the two swatches were actually different paints. Obviously they could not tell the difference. I also tested the lightfastness for about half a year and saw no fading at all, so it is very reliable. I've really fallen in love with this brand and would recommend it without hesitation.

This colour is a mix of cadmium yellow and two white pigments. You could easily mix your own. The use of PW4 suggests you might want to do your own light fastness testing. In any case you might want to bump this a bit towards brown.

I tried this colour out in the 50p 5ml sample pack and it was simply stunning. I really wasn't expecting much because of the comparatively cheap price, but it was easily up to par with (if not better than!) my Winsor and Newton paints. It is incredibly bright and pigmented and flows wonderfully, and doesn't fall out of mix with other colours as my Daniel Smith Ultramarine & French Ultramarine blues have a tendency to do. It also rewets very well which is a 'must' for me as I always decant my paints into pans to dry before use. I have yet to try out any of the other paints in the range but as soon as I need any more I will certainly will, and I can definitely recommend French Ultramarine Blue.
